The UC San Diego Basic Writing Program is designed to help you master the critical thinking, reading, and writing skills that will enable you to succeed at the university and in your professional lives.

We offer two courses for those who have not yet met the university’s Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR)

  • SDCC1 for native speakers of English
  • SDCC4 for English language learners

In our writing courses, you can expect to:

  • read and analyze challenging and interesting essays
  • explore these essays with your classmates in lively discussions
  • write and revise frequently, based on thoughtful feedback from your instructors and peers
  • acquire the foundational skills that will enable you to enroll in your College Writing courses

Please note that the sooner you take the AWPE, the sooner you will be able to enroll in your writing class
